Sian McKeever - Cobweb

Name:
Sian McKeever

Age:
14

School:
Canadian International School

Past experience:
Yes, at EduArts classic drama program! I enjoy acting more now than when I was young, because I understand better what I am doing and it is more than just standing there being awkward.

Why this production?
I like this play a lot more than other Shakespeare plays, it’s interesting and fun. I didn’t really care what role I play as long as I got in.

What is your role and how would you describe your character in the play?
I play Cobweb, a cheeky fairy. Even though this fairy is a guy, I will play him more feminine than masculine, because it’s easier for me.

Favourite moment?
The part where Helena and Hermia fights. It’s interesting.

My most beautiful dream is…
I haven’t had any good dreams that I can remember.

On a midsummer night I…
sleep.

If I have magical powers I would…
Probably be invisible.

School:
Alliance Primary School

Past experience:
Touchstone in As You Like It (s4a)

Fun fact:

How are you enjoying this production?
Of course! I play a character who annoys other people, and I like to annoy people as well. I like to play tricks on others and tell funny jokes. When I came here for the first time I saw my costume and knew that I will be taking a dog and a lantern that will go on and off.

What is your role and how would you describe your character in the play?

I play Starveling. I need to pretend to be deaf and can’t hear a thing other people says.

My favourite character is…

I like Puck, but my favourite is Pyramus. He stabbed himself with a sword and he pretends to be dead. I like all the funny pretense in the play-within-a-play.

My most beautiful dream is…

One night I thought I went to a dessert land and there are many sweet things, like candy rain, and it’s full of ice cream and cake.

On a midsummer night I…

Love to sew. I am very interested in sewing since I love working with my hands. My hands are always moving!

If I have magical powers I would…
fly all over the world because I’ve never been abroad before.

Joseph Lin - Theseus

Joseph Lin Chi Wo

Age:

School:
Chinese University of Hong Kong, MA in English Literature

Past experience:
Shows at CUHK

Fun fact:
Drama transformed me. It channeled my creative energy into the right place.

Why this production?
To understand Shakespeare you need to act it out. Stage directions such as blocking, i.e. how the characters stand in relation to each other, all these just make Shakespeare so much richer. This production is a much welcomed break from working on shows at the University, where people tend to be too serious. We would sit at a table and pour through the script, analyzing every tiny detail. Here, I work with a cast much younger than me. They have so much energy and they just laugh all the time. It is really brilliant.

What is your role and how would you describe your character in the play?
I play Theseus, the mythical king and creator of Athens. He represents law and order in the play, as opposed to Oberon, the fantastical fairy king. These two characters represent an interesting contrast. When characters talk to each other inside Athens, they always follow reason and everything is orderly. And when they go to the forest (symbolically a place of wilderness and fantasy), magic happens.

My favourite moment in the play is…
There are many. One has to be “the play within the play”. For this part there is an introduction that can have 2 different meanings depending on how you say it. If you focus on the lines without the punctuation, it is a fairly normal welcoming speech, but if you pay attention to the punctuation, the meaning not only changes 180 degrees. Just by putting in different punctuation, Shakespeare changed the meaning completely. That is a brilliant and funny speech.

What is Shakespeare to you?
Wow…what kind of question is that for a literature student! He is amazing. You just don’t know how his brain works. It boggles my mind that he can consistently produce so many brilliant works. For a typical writer you can expect 1 or 2 masterpieces in their career, but Shakespeare…everything is so tight. If you have tried to adapt his plays you will understand why. When you try to cut Shakespeare down you will realize that every word is there for a good reason. If you take away anything it’s just isn’t as good. That is just amazing.

Name a favourite dream.
I think a very fun dream would be similar to what happened inside A Midsummer Night’s Dream, when I can play tricks on people and have them fall in love.

What’s a favourite thing to do on a midsummer’s night?
When I was working on shows at the University, there’s always this moment close to midnight when I was so tired I want to give up, and then things would suddenly click together. One time it happened on a midsummer night when I was still an undergrad. The greatest moment is epiphany. When everything clicks beautifully together.

Nina Phillippa Wing-Yan Chung

Age:

School:
German Swiss International School

Past experience:
I was a mouse in Faust

Fun fact:
I speak English, German, and a bit of Cantonese.

How are you enjoying this production?
I like the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, though there are parts that are too complicated. This production is a lot of fun.

What is your role and how would you describe your character in the play?
I play Moth. I like being a fairy because I only have a few lines. I was very happy when I knew that I would be playing a fairy.

My most beautiful dream is…
I haven’t had many happy dreams. I had many scary dreams. In one of them there was a big bird sitting on a tree that looked down at the building where I live. Then there were 3 people all dressed in black and it really scared me.

On a midsummer night I…
Stay up late and play lego. Sometimes I just hang around.

If I have magical powers I would…
Turn my brother into a horrid beast and send him away.

Adrian Mak - Oberon

Name:
Adrian Mak

Age:
16

School:
Hong Kong University Graduates Association College

Past experience:
School plays and drama competitions

Why this production?
School recommended me after my participation in school plays and drama competitions. When I knew that I will play Oberon, I am very excited about the production. I love drama.

What is your role and do you see yourself in your character?
Oberon is very mysterious fairy king, also a dark character. Although I’m a friendly person, deep in me there is a darker self that people don’t always see. So yes, I do see myself in Oberon.

Who is your favourite character in the play?
I really love the role of Oberon, but in the whole play I like Puck the most. He’s mischievous and smart, but he often jeopardizes the situation until I come out and save the day. I really enjoy working with Sherman on our scenes.

Favourite moment?
The wedding scene when the two pairs of lovers enjoy a belated and romantic union. I think it’s very romantic and it’s great to see that they come together and find true love after running around so much.

My most beautiful dream is…
When I was small I dreamt about fairyland of marshmallows and lollipop. As a kid I enjoyed sweets very much, so that’s my most beautiful dream.

On a midsummer night I…
I like to hang with my family and enjoy the moonlight.

If I have magical powers I would…
Of course I won’t do evil deeds but I probably would use it for tests and getting all the knowledge that I can. (That’s just slightly evil Adrian!)

I like this play. There are many funny parts and a lot of things going on. I am excited because this is the first time I’m working in a professional context.

What is your role and how would you describe your character in the play?
I play Pease-blossom, an obedient fairy to Queen Titania. She is quite stubborn, a bit like me – she’s always jumping around and can’t keep still.

My most beautiful dream is…
I mostly forget my dreams the next day.

On a midsummer night I…
Play outdoor sports and I like to go hiking, especially if I’m on vacation.

If I have magical powers I would…

Why this production?
I like the story, we watched the video during rehearsals. I like coming to rehearsals because I am making new friends and Mr. Spurr is a very good teacher.

I play Mustard Seed, who talks a lot. I think I am only sometimes chatty although I was told I am a very talkative person. I like being a fairy because I can turn everyone into an animal.

My favourite moment of the show is…
The wedding! It will be a beautiful wedding in this play.

About dreams…
Sometimes I dream at night that I’m a teacher
